MISSION

Black Bear Rescue Manitoba’s (BBRM) mission is to protect orphaned and injured black bear cubs from suffering or death, and to promote their welfare and dignity.

MANDATE

  • Providing care and comfort to orphaned or injured black bears cubs and releasing them into the wild in optimal condition to maximize their chances of survival.

  • Educating the public about black bear-related issues and interactions with humans.

  • Enhancing public understanding of bear behaviour and promoting greater tolerance for co-existing with black bears.

VALUES

  • BBRM views all bears as sentient beings deserving of an autonomous and peaceful life.

  • BBRM views each cub in its care as an individual.

  • BBRM treats each cub in its care with dignity and respect.

OUR VIEW ON BEARS

Black bears are highly intelligent sentient beings who feel fear, pain and stress, as well as appreciating comfort and security.

Every cub that passes through our facility has its own unique personality, likes and dislikes, favourite foods, enrichment activities and bonded companion cubs. During their time with BBRM, each cub’s welfare needs are carefully considered and met.

BBRM is working to change unjust negative perceptions about black bears, by educating the public about the species and promoting ways in which humans and black bears can humanely and ethically co-exist.
